Little River Falls

Little River Falls. Photo by me, November 2007.

This is the prettiest waterfall in Alabama in my mind and it is easily accessible too. Little River Falls is located in the northeastern part of the state in the Little River Canyon National Preserve on Highway 35 between Gaylesville and Fort Payne. Out of the many natural wonders in the northern part of the state this is one I place at the top of the list.

When there is a high volume of water going over the falls it comes crashing down in a thunderous roar. The Little River drops 45 feet over the rocks here as it begins its journey through Little River Canyon.

Here is a wider view of the waterfall from the viewing platform at a time of lower water flow. That is the bridge on Highway 35 in the distance and you can also view the waterfall from atop the bridge too.

You can see here how the force of the water has neatly scoured away the rocks like layers of skin.

I would strongly discourage climbing on this waterfall as the rocks are slippery and jagged. Over the years people have died at this waterfall. During my last visit barriers had been erected to prevent people from venturing out there. In earlier years you could easily walk right out onto the falls and take a look down from the top as I did in the two photos above.

Parking is free and the trail down to the falls is paved and only a short walk.
